Are you a new artist and would like to know how to improve your drawing skills? What about an artist trying to get back into the game after years of ignoring your practice? Whether you’re starting from scratch or you want to improve pre-existing skills, it’s time to start working on your drawing abilities.
Do you know how to improve your drawing skills? It’s frustrating when you feel like you’re just spinning your wheels. How can you improve your drawing skills without wasting time?
We’re here to offer advice. Keep reading to learn all about how to improve your drawing skills.
1- Learn to “See”
This might seem confusing to some blossoming artists, but it’s one of the best tips we can offer if you’re struggling to improve your art. You need to learn to “see” like an artist.
So what does this mean?
Most people, when they begin drawing, draw what they see in their heads. Even if they’re looking at something to draw or copy, they don’t quite grasp what it really looks like.
Take a hand, for example. When you draw a hand, does it look like a hand, or does it have a hand “shape?” Put your hand in front of you in an almost horizontal position and try drawing it.
It no longer looks like what your brain thinks of as a hand, but you’re drawing more accurately.
2- Take a Life Drawing Class
Even if you’re trying to become a cartoonist, animator, or traditional tattoo artist, you still need to draw from life if you want to improve. Stylizing your art is great, but you need to know the rules to break them.
Plenty of community colleges offer life drawing classes. You get to take your time under the watchful eye of an instructor and improve your drawing abilities.
This is also a great way to get acquainted with other local art lovers!
3- See With “New Eyes”
Again, this one might be confusing for many new artists. You only have one set of eyes, so how are you supposed to see your art from new ones?
Whenever you draw something, put it away for a few days when you’re finished with it. Look at it again later and see if you notice any new problems or mistakes. Take note of those mistakes and try not to make them next time.
If you’re drawing on a computer or tablet, you also have the benefit of being able to flip your art. This will give you a whole new perspective and let you see whether or not your art is symmetrical or looks right from both sides.
While it’s normal for art to look “off” from a different perspective, this is a great way to figure out if you have any tendencies that you need to fix (like always making one side of a face larger than the other for example).
Improve Your Drawing Skills Today
Sure, everyone will tell you that the best way to improve your drawing skills is to practice every day, but how helpful is this if you keep making the same mistakes over and over again? Also, you can strengthen these habits to achieve high performance.
While daily practice is key, use these tips to improve your art quickly.
